WEEDY SEA DRAGON

The Design

For our first design we have chosen a creature close to home, the weedy sea dragon.

In this section, we delve into the profound significance behind the designs adorning our clothing items, all meticulously crafted by artist Holly Bodaburrows with inspiration from a drawing by Jake Mason. Despite being classified as “least concern” on the ICUN list, weedy sea dragons (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) face various threats, including changing sea conditions, human pollution, habitat destruction, and overharvesting for the aquarium trade. As remarkable indicators of water quality, their vulnerability underscores the urgent need for marine conservation efforts.

Each design embodies a narrative that not only celebrates the beauty of marine life but also raises awareness about the challenges these creatures face. Take, for instance, the “Sea Dragon Serenity” design, featuring a blocked-out circular version on the front and a large, high-detail circular rendition on the back. This sketch-like artwork captures the enchanting essence of the weedy sea dragon, inviting wearers to immerse themselves in its majestic presence.

On the other hand, the “Phyllopteryx taeniolatus Special R2TO Edition” boasts a sophisticated design with a focus on detail and scientific accuracy. The front showcases a high-detail circular version of the weedy sea dragon, while the back features a horizontal composition incorporating the scientific name, common name, and ICUN status. This comprehensive design serves as both a tribute to the species and a reminder of the importance of preserving their fragile habitats.
